Our Purpose
The Purpose of this Blog
The purpose of this blog is to help Christians further develop their critical thinking skills about current events in our world. This entails doing three things. First, we need to make sure we understand what the Bible says. As we learn what the Bible teaches (”sound Bible doctrine”), we learn the thinking of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16). From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible presents a unified, coherent, and cohesive system of thought that provides the believer with the ability to discern the trends, the traps, the patterns in the world around us so that we can better understand what is going on and why it is happening. We call this cohesive system of thought a biblical framework. The biblical framework stands in contrast with the framework of the world’s thinking, which the Bible often describes as worldliness. Second, we need to have a clear understanding of the events of our times, from politics to academia, from wall street to main street, in order to evaluate all the little subcultures of our world in light of the “counter culture” of biblical Christianity. Third, we need to develop the skill to take the biblical framework and lay it over the current events in order to develop a biblical understanding of our times so we can make wise decisions.
Developing solid discernment on current events is inherent in the process of spiritual growth. It is one thing to claim a viewpoint is consistent with a biblical worldview and another thing altogether to work out its implications in philosophy, legislation, taxes, business, relationships, or education. For example, most Christians would claim to stand in support of the historical position of biblical Christianity on monogamous, heterosexual marriage. It is something else again to work out the implications of this belief in tax codes, hate-speech legislation, the defense of marriage act, same sex marriage legislation, education policy, employee policies, and even health care legislation. Part of our objective is to help connect the dots between the belief and the practice.
Many nominal Christians make all kinds of claims that this or that view, opinion, educational system, legislation, or policy is biblical or Christian. Often these claims can be mutually contradictory. Christians influenced by denominations shaped by liberal theological views will take very different stances from those who believe the Bible is the inerrant, infallible Word of God. This is why theology and Biblical truth matter. In this blog, we will provide both insights for biblical study methodology, as well as exegetical insights, and links to help the reader understand how biblical principles are derived from biblical passages. In the end, we will show how principles are derived from the text of the Bible and then how they relate to the philosophies, policies, and politics of our day.
To achieve these three ends we will post articles on insights related to biblical studies: Old Testament, New Testament, theology, prophecy, hermeneutics, Bible Study methods. Then we will also make application of these principles to current events. A biblically grounded Christian should be discerning of the times as part of what it means to have wisdom. We should be like the “sons of Issachar who understood the times.” (1 Chron. 12:32).
The category entitled “Taking Every Thought Captive…” is the section that will focus most on developing discernment in the events of our day. Helping us to build a biblically developed and grounded understanding of history, economics, politics, law, family, marriage, science, and as many areas of human intellection as we can work on. We are commanded to take “every” thought captive, not just some.
Since this involves both a knowledge of the Bible and a knowledge of what’s happening today, we will also post a variety of links to both theological journal articles and to news and opinion articles regarding current events.
At times we will also ask for comments or for you to send us links to articles you may deem insightful. Our team will vet all such comments and links before posting, to make sure that what is posted is edifying to the body of believers.
